Welcome to The Trades: Our Mission for Authentic Northern Artistry

By Devin

When I first founded Northern Trades, it wasn't just about launching an online store. It was about filling a gap I felt personally as a maker and saw throughout our community. Up here, "the trades" isn't just a business term; it’s a way of life. It’s the exchange of knowledge, the respect for the land, and the hours spent at the kitchen table turning raw materials into something heirloom-quality.

Our Mission: Authenticity and Integrity

My mission is simple: To provide the highest quality, authentically sourced materials while honoring the traditional crafts they come from. I wanted to create a central hub where a maker could find exactly what they needed—whether that’s specialty needles for leatherwork, bulk dentalium shells, or a specific shade of seed beads that haven't been in stock for years. But more importantly, I wanted to ensure that these materials are sourced with integrity.

What We Do: Supporting the Maker and the Artist

At Northern Trades, we serve as a bridge between the land and the studio:

  • Ethical Sourcing: We focus on commercial tan hides and materials that meet the highest standards. We work hard to bridge the gap between harvesters and creators, ensuring that every hide and shell is handled with respect.

  • A Resource for Every Skill Level: From leather scrap bundles for beginners to professional-grade tools for masters, we provide the toolkit for the next generation of Northern artists.

  • Artist-First Partnerships: We don't just sell supplies; we showcase the finished work. Our gallery is a space where Indigenous artistry is celebrated, helping artists reach a global audience.

Why Keeping Tradition Alive Matters

Every piece of fur, every carving, and every intricate beadwork design tells a story of survival, culture, and identity. My goal is to make sure those stories keep being told for generations to come. By providing the right tools and a fair marketplace, we’re helping to keep our local economy strong and our traditions even stronger.

I’m so glad you’re here. This blog, "The Trades," will be a place where I’ll share behind-the-scenes looks at our sourcing trips, artist spotlights, and tutorials on using our specialty supplies.

Thanks for being part of this journey. Now, let’s get to work.
